What I Wore Wednesday – Favorite Looks from 2020

It’s what I wore Wednesday with a twist – instead of favorite looks from the month, I’m giving you favorite looks from all of 2020! I participated in a bunch of style challenges on Instagram this year and some of the looks I pulled together were a lot of fun. I did not let the pandemic stop me from having fun with my wardrobe. Even when working from home I got dressed each day. Yes, many days were a lot more casual than if I was going to the office, but getting dressed helped me feel normal and in control and was vital to my mental health. No judgement on anyone rocking the yoga pants and sweats life, I totally get that! This is just what worked for me.

It was hard to narrow it down, but I chose one favorite outfit from each month. Without further ado, here they are in order!

January – I was so excited to find this furry vest at the thrift store. It’s hard to resist the urge to pet myself all day when I wear it, but I sure do love it!

February – I embraced all things leopard this year. It is seriously my favorite pattern ever now. Can’t stop, won’t stop.

March – When March hits I always feel a pull to start wearing brighter colors and start bringing my wardrobe into spring. This floral blazer is perfect for that, warm enough for the cold weather but springy feeling in colors.

April – Of course we had snow on Easter because 2020. But like Prince sang, sometimes it snows in April. I had a fun photo shoot with a pretty dress anyway!

May – I love the look of a knotted shirt over a dress. Gives the dress more versatility too.

June – My 2020 Pride look. Love is love always and rainbows always win for me.

July – I think this was from the ice cream challenge I did on Instagram, this was for sherbert. I love this cute skirt I bought from a good Insta friend’s Poshmark closet. It became a favorite purchase of 2020.

August – My denim vest has been a summer staple for several years now. It adds so much to a simple sundress like this one and makes it more comfortable in a cool air conditioned office.

September – This became the “Sweater Everyone Bought” on Instagram this Fall, but it is seriously the best thing ever, thank you Target. I am also in love with these Knox Rose jeans, they have an elastic waistband and the colorful stripe down the side is amazing.

October – This dress and jacket from my friend Cyndy’s shop became two of my favorite pieces from this year as well. So versatile and so fun.

November  – Back into cozy and comfy styles. Who doesn’t love a sherpa vest?

December – Finishing out the year with some fun festive looks for a Holiday Hums challenge on Instagram. How fun is this adorable shirt I found at Style Encore?

As far as shopping goes this year I had to get a little creative with my thrifting during the pandemic, I did more shopping at consignment shops versus regular thrift shops. I also let myself relax a bit on the secondhand only life. I bought a few things from Target, Amazon and Old Navy. I also bought a number of things from my friend Cyndy’s shop. I will always support my friends and Lula was on fire this year with some of the new styles they brought out.

My biggest takeaway this year and the thing I’m the most proud of is that I learned to embrace and accept my body for what it is. I gained weight this year. We can make jokes about the quarantine 15, but for real, I just wasn’t as active this year and also, I’m 39. My metabolism is not what it used to be. And yes, I’m a stress eater. So, I’m pretty much settling into a size 14 in pants and a size large in tops and you know what? I’m ok with that. I have found some wonderfully awesome body positive folks to follow on Instagram. My favorite quote of the year comes from one of them, local gal Fashion Fix MN, who says “change your clothes, not your body”. What she means is, don’t change your body to fit a certain size. Change your size to fit your body. So, I took that to heart and I wear clothes that are comfortable and make me feel good. I love myself and I love my body. I’m not going to say it was easy to reach this place, but in the grand scheme of things, life is just too short and I just don’t want to obsess about numbers anymore. The end.

I look forward to continuing to play dress up in 2021. I post daily on Instagram (beth.in.the.mirror – follow me!) and I will try to do my monthly what I wore posts here again. Stay tuned!

  1. Change your clothes, not your body, YES. I need to remember that. I’ve put on weight this year (thanks also to quarantine and age… woohoo) and I need to remind myself of that statement. I love all these looks, it’s hard to pick a favorite! I love the yellow dress + denim vest, and the furry vest with stripes, those might be my faves.

  2. It’s great (and healthy) that you’ve come to accept your body. We all should. Happiness, not conforming to sexist culture, should be our goal.

Good outfits. They all say “2020” in their relaxed vibe. That’s a good thing!

    Happy New Year, friend.
