Epic Long Weekend
Oh my friends, I had a wonderful four-day weekend! I want to recap it, hopefully this post won’t be too crazy long! Let’s rewind a bit and start with Thanksgiving.
I got up crazy early and went with my sister-in-law and a friend of ours to do the Turkey Trot 6k in St. Paul. It was very chilly, but it was sunny so that was nice. We finished in about an hour and 20 minutes which I thought was pretty good considering we just walked the whole thing! It was a nice way to start off the day no matter what!
After the race I stopped back home and picked up Ollie and he and I went to my parents so I could make my apple pie with my mom. Ollie played with my dad a bit and watched some of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade. He got to see the Chase from Paw Patrol balloon, so he was pretty excited about that! When my pie was finished he and I headed home so I could help Nate clean up the house and finish preparing the meal before my in-laws were due to arrive at 3:00.
I made a delicious appetizer – a Cranberry Pepper Cheese dip. We had a little cocktail hour while Nate finished up with smoking the turkey. Then we were ready for dinner and let me tell you, that smoked bird is SO good. We enjoyed green beans, mashed potatoes, stuffing and rolls as well. And Ollie true to form pretty much ate a few bites of macaroni and cheese. Kids I tell you. Once our stomachs settled we also enjoyed the apple pie I made and a pecan pie Nate’s sister made. And then we rolled ourselves into bed. So. Much. Food! It was a good day overall.
Friday we slept in. I was shocked, Ollie slept until after 8:00. I had no complaints about that! When we were all up, we decided it would be fun to go out for donuts, so we went to Dunkin Donuts for a little treat. Then I left the boys and went to do just a little black Friday shopping with my mom at Lakeshore Learning. I bought Ollie’s birthday and Christmas presents, so that feels pretty good! I met back up with my boys and we had Brasa for lunch and then went to get our Christmas tree. We found a really great one this year.
The afternoon found me in a bit of an adventure. I was hell-bent on finding this light up statue Unicorn that Target has. All lights were 30% off through Saturday, so I figured Friday was my best bet for finding it. My usual Target was sold out, but another one close to my house said they still had one. So Ollie and I ran down there real quick and I’m not kidding when I say I may have also been literally running in the store too. And we got to the shelf and….it was gone. I pulled it up on my app and it said you could still do the order and pickup in store, so I went ahead and bought it that way. We did our other shopping and then I got a notice stating my order could not be completed. So I figured out the next closest Target that had one and bought it for the order and pickup at that store. So a whole bunch of running around later and I finally have a Unicorn in my yard. Yes I am that big of a nerd. Then we decorated our tree and I have to say, it might be my favorite we’ve ever had.
Saturday was my birthday! And did my boys ever spoil me. We went and got coffee and then they took me to Can Can Wonderland. We had so much fun mini-golfing and playing pinball games! Ollie was in love with everything. Pro-tip if you have kids, go on a Saturday morning, there were lots of other families. We ended up eating lunch there as well. It was such a fun way to celebrate.
Then we headed home and hung out for a while and then my parents took us to dinner at Cossettas in St. Paul which was delicious as always. And we definitely enjoyed some birthday cannoli as well! My parents also got me some amazing soft and warm gloves, a really pair of ear muffs and new Bath and Body Works scents for winter. After Ollie went to bed, Nate and I settled in with a movie we ended up really enjoying called The Rocker. Reminded me a lot of School of Rock, but with a teenage band instead of a bunch of kids. I recommend it!
Sunday was Nate’s birthday. No sleeping in on this day though, I had the early Mass at church with my choir. Nate and Ollie had a nice little daddy/son coffee date while I was gone though. And then we had a delicious breakfast together of pancakes, bacon and hash browns. In the afternoon Nate wanted to go over to Up Down for a little bit (he’s actually building an arcade cabinet, so it wasn’t just for fun, there was research involved, lol) so Ollie and I had a playdate over at Jen’s house with her and her girls. Ollie had fun playing with the kitty and dancing to Koo Koo Kangaroo music with the girls.
We headed back home and Nate met up with us. Then we went to his parents house to celebrate our birthdays and also his dad’s birthday (November/early December is very heavy on birthdays in our family). We had delicious pasta carbonara for dinner and cake for dessert. I got a fun new coloring book from Nate’s parents and also the entire Hunger Games movie series. And then my most epic present was from my sister-in-law. I asked her to make this for me and she sure delivered – a Unicorn hat/scarf. It’s awesome. It’s very warm and I see many nights ahead cuddled up in my basement and getting my Unicorn on!
After that we headed home, got Ollie off to bed and then finished our epic weekend with some episodes of the Office while I painted my nails. It was hard to go bed knowing the weekend was over, but as Dr. Seuss said, don’t frown because it’s over, smile because it happened. I’m definitely smiling!
