Thrifty Tuesday – Secondhand/Shop My Closet Challenge
First of all, I should be doing Tuesday Topics today, but I just could not come up with my three things. The topic this week is three casting mistakes in film. The only thing I could come up with is Shailene Woodley in anything (but especially Divergent). I am just not a fan of her if you can’t tell! Anyway, since I am skipping Tuesday Topics I decided today would be a good day to jump back into Thrifty Tuesday and introduce a challenge I’m taking on.
About a month ago, my friend Shea from Shea Lennon said something about trying to maybe try and only shop secondhand for six months. I told her I loved the idea and would consider joining her. She started in August, I have decided my go date will be September 1st.
I’m also trying to just cut the shopping down in general. Basically my plan is to shop my own closet first, and when I find I’m missing something or there is a hole, then I go to a thrift store or consignment shop. Now obviously this does not count for things like underwear or socks, but you get the general idea.
Honestly I’m already doing about 75% of my shopping secondhand. Another 10% is things like Lularoe or Agnes and Dora. But guess what? I have found Lularoe at Style Encore. There’s also ThredUp or Poshmark. So I don’t have to totally give it up. Agnes and Dora has become a little overwhelming in the number of styles they are releasing, so I don’t have a problem stepping back from them. Now you’re wondering the other 15% of my shopping? Target. Oh Target, why can’t I quit you?? It’s so easy to just stop by the clearance rack and justify that one shirt here and there. Those one off purchases add up though.
So my overall goal is to shop my own closet and then go to Style Encore, ThredUp, Clothes Mentor, Savers or Arcs Value Village for anything else. I would like to cut my spending in half. And I would like to reduce the amount of STUFF I have. I want to have items in my closet that I love and enjoy wearing. I’ve slowly whittled it down but I can still do more. This weekend I’ll start pulling out my Fall and Winter stuff and will work on culling things a bit further.
I’m actually excited about this. I think it will be good for me. I think it will also help me in living my life with purpose as I set out to do at the beginning of the year. It’s definitely an ethical approach to shopping and that makes me feel good. So here we go! I’ll miss you Target, but I’ll see you this spring (and let’s be real, I’ll see you for the boring stuff like laundry soap still. You just can’t entice me to buy things I don’t need anymore.)
