Itasca Thoughts

Wow. What a gift last week was. It flew by so fast. As I sit here to write this post I can’t even wrap my head around all the thoughts and things I want to share. Instead of a play by play recap that will just get long and boring I think I just want to share some pictures and moments from this vacation.

It was truly special. I cannot think of a better word or way to explain it than that. Ollie is at the perfect age to enjoy the park and all the activities. I hope he remembers this trip. I believe he just might, the first memories I have of traveling somewhere is when I was around his age and went to Duluth with my parents, so I think Ollie will hopefully remember this one. He had a blast. He caught his first fish. He loved dipping his feet in the water at the Headwaters of the Mississippi. He got to help drive a boat. And I think one of his favorite things was sitting at the table in the cabin and playing Oregon Trail with us.

We stayed up late and slept in pretty much every day. We went out exploring, but had lots of time around the cabin to relax with coloring, drawing, reading and playing games. We cooked lots of meals. We had a few bonfires. We fished, boated, hiked, and drove up to Bemidji to meet Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox.

Basically this trip was everything I wanted it to be and more. It was relaxing and fun. It’s funny too, while I obviously am quite blessed to have the situation I have where I still get to see Ollie during the day in a workweek, getting to be with him non-stop for all those days I observed so much development and growth in him. It’s beautiful and heartbreaking all at the same time. He’s just such a great kid. I’ll cherish the memories of this trip for years to come. I actually found myself quite emotional when we left the park on Friday, but I know we’ll be back. It will always be a special place waiting for us with the gates wide open saying “welcome home.”

  1. Love that quote from Muir. It’s so true. I feel most comfortable when I’m out in the middle of nowhere. Ironic. Haha 🙂

  2. I’m so glad that you guys had a great time on your vacation! I loved seeing all of the memories that you three made last week!
